Exercising over the holidays- how to stay motivated

Christmas and New Years is undoubtedly a very busy time of the year for most people. Parties, family get togethers, last minute shopping and trips away can leave your time poor over the holidays. However, you want to keep your fitness up and enjoy feeling fit and healthy, consider these tips to keep yourself motivated over the holiday period.

Get organised

Plan you exercise around work, parties, shopping trips etc. Often getting a workout done in the morning, before work, leaves you feeling energetic and free to do as you wish in the evening.

Short higher intensity workouts

As we can often be juggling many events and parties this time of the year, time is of the essence. Doing shorter, higher intensity workouts that are equipment free that can be done from your living room. This will save time but still helping you build up a sweat and get those endorphins circulating around your body leaving you felling energised.

Set small goals

Set a realistic workout goal for the next seven days based on what is going on in your life. You can do this by setting a target number of workouts, miles or minutes you think you can realistically achieve.

Be accountable

If you plan to work out in the morning, set an alarm and have your workout clothes laid out. Bring your gym bag to work and go straight there from work. Schedule a workout with a friend to help you stay accountable and motivated.

Exercise with family and friends

At this time of the year many friends and family members are home for the holidays. Why not meet them and go for a walk, jog or run while catching up. Make exercise family friendly like walks on the beach or to a local forest. That way you don’t loose valuable family time while keeping your fitness goals on track.

Sign up for a New Year’s Day event

There is always lots of charity and family events this time of the year. Sign up to one or two to motivate you and your family to get out and be active. These are always a great days out and good escape from being indoors and eating Christmas pudding!

Here at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy Clinic, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you wish to enquire about booking an appointment please don’t hesitate to contact us here.
