Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the density of our bones, it is a silent disease. It is estimated it affects 300,000 people in Ireland. It is preventable and treatable in the majority of people and the earlier the intervention the better. Some of the risk factors for developing osteoporosis are a history of fracture, low body mass index, long-term use of steroid medicines, current smoking, alcohol intake of 2 or more drinks per day and a parental history of fracture.

Osteoporosis is mainly treated with a combination of medication, education and exercise ( weights). It is important to seek advice from a qualified professional on what exercises are suitable. Lesley is our specialist in osteoporosis, and she will assess you and give you  the relevant advice and start you on an exercise programme.

We also run stronger for longer weights classes which are supervised by a chartered physiotherapist and are suitable for people with osteoporosis who prefer to exercise in a group environment.
