Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in your body.  It’s a complex joint with many tendons, ligaments and muscles working together like a well-oiled engine.

If one small part fails to work properly it can have knock on effects on the whole shoulder area.  It can also be an easy part of the body to injure, because the socket of the shoulder joint is shallow compared to the bigger ball of the upper arm. It is supported by a joint capsule which is reinforced by ligaments. Muscles around the shoulder joint also help to support it. The shoulder is the joint that allows the greatest range of movement and consequently the greatest instability.

Waking up with pain?

Starting your day waking up with pain is not beneficial to you, both physically and mentally. So what can you do about it? Most shoulder pain is treatable, so you can get back on track with your life and start your day without pain.

The first thing to do is to identify what could be causing your back pain, there are a number of common reasons including:

  • Poor quality mattress

  • Poor posture

  • Lack of exercise leading to stiff muscles and joints

  • Spinal Stiffness – Thoracic back pain, makes people more prone to shoulder pain in the morning.

  • Repetitive injury

  • Medical conditions - arthritis and bursitis

There are a few things you can try to ease your shoulder pain, including:

  • Try sleeping on your back or other shoulder, relieving the pressure on your sore shoulder at night.

  • Don’t use too many pillows – this can stretch the head muscles too much which puts pressure on your shoulders.

  • Alternatively if you use only one flat pillow, try adding another one, this also takes pressure off your shoulders.

  • You may need to change your mattress. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a mattress has a lifespan of approximately 8 years. Depending on the quality and type of your mattress, you may get more or less time from it.

  • Take care to warm up your joints before any strenuous movements or exercises.

If taking these preventive measures is not working for your pain then the best course of action is to make an appointment with a physiotherapist.
