Why is it important to do my prescribed exercises?

You have just finished your most recent physiotherapy session and your physiotherapist has given you a couple of exercises to do. You might be wondering if you really need to do them especially if you are starting to feel better.

The answer is yes! The exercises given to you have been specifically tailored to your individual needs and goals based on your assessment. You can think of these exercises as an extension of your appointment. Your physiotherapist only sees you for a 30min session, so it is up to you to take their advice and do the exercises to continue your progress. During your session, your physiotherapist may help you feel better immediately, but the exercises will be tools that you can use to maintain or further improve the progress you have already seen.

For example, when you are feeling stiff in your upper back manual therapy from a physiotherapist can provide immediate relief. However, that stiffness may start to creep back up in a day or two after treatment. Doing the exercises as prescribed can help prevent that stiffness from coming back now and in the future. Completing your exercises regularly is also important for strengthening as it can take 4-6 weeks of regular exercises to make noticeable improvements in your strength.

Here at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy, we use an online exercise program that makes it easy to remember and complete your exercises. If needed, your physiotherapist will send over your individualized program with detailed instructions to let you know how many to do, and how often to do them. We can also print them out for you if that works best. If you have any questions about your program, do not hesitate to reach out to us. It can be difficult to remember all the information you were given during a physiotherapy appointment.

If you have been struggling with an injury or need a tune up of your exercises, contact us here at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy. Our experienced physiotherapists can help improve pain, help you return to your favourite activities, and achieve your goals.
