What is the difference between Orthotics and Insoles?

You may be coming to this blog post to answer the very question above. What are Orthotics? What are insoles? Do I need any of them? Keep reading to find the answers to these questions, and how we can help here at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy.

What are Insoles?

Insoles are typically made of a soft material like foam or gel. They come in all different shapes and sizes, but generally can be inserted into your shoes to replace the bedding. They help to provide comfort, relieve pain, and possibly prevent further injury. They can be found at different pharmacies, sporting goods stores, and at physiotherapy clinics.

They are generally inexpensive and can fit into many different shoes or target a specific problem like shin splints. Generally, they provide more short-term relief, especially for aggravating activities like jobs that require you to stand on your feet for long periods of time. However, they are not always a permanent solution.  They are not customised to your individual needs as they are made for a wide range of people, and typically need to be replaced every 6 months.

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are very similar to insoles but provide a more rigid support that is customised to your individual foot. They can correct alignment issues like overpronation when you walk or stand and distribute weight more evenly through your foot. Orthotics can be very effective in reducing pain and correcting any problems.

You may notice faster changes than insoles. Orthotics are typically recommended to those who have consistent and long-lasting pain in the foot, ankle, and sometimes knee.  Orthotics can be more expensive but should last up to 5 years. Some insurance plans provide coverage for custom made orthotics.

How do I know what I need?

It is important to consult with a physiotherapist to help determine whether an insole or orthotic is the right choice. Our physiotherapists provide detailed and patient specific examinations to see your general biomechanics and alignment of your foot, and leg.

We carry a wide variety of insoles in the clinic and can trial them day of. If not, we have access to a large catalogue online to determine the best solution.  Do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions or are interested in booking an appointment.

How are the orthotics made?

Orthotics require a 1-hour appointment slot at a cost of 145 euro in addition to the cost of the orthotics themselves.  Aileen is our resident expert in all thing’s orthotics, and she will create a 3-D plaster cast of your foot that we will send out to be made. When they arrive back in the clinic, we schedule a quick free 15 min fitting to trial them and make any changes that are needed.

We want to make sure you are happy with your new orthotic. They may take some time getting used to, so it is important to gradually increase the time you are wearing them.

Here at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy in Dublin 4, we will develop a personalised treatment plan that will help you manage your symptoms and help you return to your previous function as timely as possible.
