Tailbone Pain After Birth

Postpartum tailbone pain (also known as coccyx pain), medically termed postpartum coccydynia, refers to discomfort or pain experienced in the tailbone area following childbirth. This condition can arise due to various factors, including trauma from the birthing process, such as pressure exerted on the coccyx during delivery. Risk factors for tailbone injury during childbirth include a large baby, an unusual position of the baby, or a narrow pelvis. Individuals with a history of tailbone injury are at a higher risk of re-injury during childbirth.

Women may experience localised pain and tenderness around the tailbone, which can intensify with sitting or direct pressure. Additionally, bruising, swelling, and discomfort during bowel movements may also be present. Postpartum coccydynia can significantly impact daily activities, particularly caring for a newborn, but with proper management, including pain relief measures, gentle exercises, and ergonomic adjustments, symptoms can be effectively managed, allowing for a smoother postpartum recovery process.

Signs and Symptoms of Tailbone Injury

  • Severe pain and tenderness concentrated in the tailbone area.

  • Bruising or swelling may be evident.

  • Pain exacerbates when sitting or applying direct pressure to the tailbone.

  • Painful bowel movements or straining may occur.

Tailbone Pain Management Tips and Treatments

Avoid prolonged sitting, especially on hard surfaces. Leaning slightly forward can alleviate direct pressure on the tailbone.

Consider using a donut cushion when sitting to relieve pressure. These cushions have a hole in the middle to prevent direct contact with the tailbone. Note that this is suitable only for individuals without skin pressure issues or vascular problems. Consult your GP if you have any concerns.

Proper use of medication, guided by your GP and pharmacist, can help alleviate pain and improve mobility.

In cases of traumatic tailbone injury, applying ice for the first couple of days can be beneficial. Apply ice for 10-15 minutes multiple times a day to alleviate symptoms.
