Pilates For Posture

Poor posture is blamed for a lot of musculoskeletal problems. Spending long periods of time in poor postures may cause increased stress and strain on muscles and joints of the body. This can lead to pain and discomfort. Sitting and standing are the two positions where we would most commonly see postural issues.

Benefits of Good Posture

There are many benefits of good posture, including:

  • Reduced back pain as you put less pressure on ligaments and muscles.

  • Helps strengthen your abdominal muscles, which support your lower back.

  • Helps protect your bones and joints, as you put less strain on them when you hold your body correctly.

  • Can aid your breathing.  When you slouch it can become an effort to breathe properly.  However, if your posture is good, your lungs and diaphragm have more room to expand and contract, giving you a more relaxed and effortless breath.

  • It is also very important during pregnancy.  Your body is under enough pressure when you are pregnant, so good posture really assists in keeping those aches and pains at bay

Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise which focuses on control and quality of movement. Movements are smooth and controlled with no impact. It is one of the best exercises to work on improving posture and structure alignment within the body, which can lead to stress in everyday life and in sports.

The best way to improve posture is by strengthening your core muscles, these  affect your ability to maintain good posture.

The emphasis on core strengthening, flexibility, and correcting muscle imbalances makes Pilates a perfect exercise option for anyone suffering from poor posture, structural imbalances or from the stresses of everyday life. Our bodies are fighting against gravity, we have a tendency to bring our head and shoulders forward which puts tension on our back and causes postural pains. Pilates enhances spinal flexibility and control of body position to correct this.

If you are having pain then we recommend getting in touch with us first for a quick assessment to make sure you don't have any serious conditions or spinal issues before starting these classes.
