Emily Smyth,

BSc (Physio)

Emily will not be available for appointments until the New Year 2025. We wish her the best of luck on her travels. Lesley will be taking over Emily’s patients until she returns.

On graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 2014, Emily moved to Auckland, New Zealand then Melbourne, Australia to work as a Physiotherapist in private practice. While there she gained great experience in the treatment and management of acute injuries, chronic conditions, and teaching clinical Pilates.

Emily completed her first Pilates teacher training in 2013 and has been teaching a mixture of mat and equipment based Pilates classes ever since. During the last six years, she completed two more Pilates teacher training courses with a focus on clinical Pilates. Emily likes to incorporate Pilates into her physio rehabilitation programmes and lead fun and varied Pilates classes.

Emily’s main interests are musculoskeletal issues such as; shoulder, neck, low back pain, jaw (TMJ) pain. She has a specific interest in treating pregnancy-related problems such as pelvic girdle pain, diastasis recti, and return to exercise after pregnancy.

Emily also specialises in cancer rehabilitation. She is a trained PINC programme therapist, a programme which focuses on rehabilitation for women throughout their cancer journey. In her years in the southern hemisphere, Emily worked with many women from diagnosis to survivorship enabling them to maintain fitness, reduce fatigue, and manage side effects from treatment. The programme focuses on patients’ quality of life and empowers women throughout their cancer journey. To further her knowledge and expertise in this area Emily has recently started a Ph.D. in Trinity College Dublin with the goal of assessing if increasing pre-operative fitness can reduce the risk of postoperative complications.

Emily has also worked in a variety of sports and was team physio to the Irish teams who competed in The Australian football league International Cup in 2017. As a keen runner herself, she has great experience and understanding in the management of sport and running injuries from acute to long term rehabilitation.

In her spare time, Emily enjoys running, reading, and attending yoga and Pilates classes.
