The iliopsoas muscle is part of a group of muscles called the hip flexor muscles. An iliopsoas strain occurs when one or more of these hip flexor muscles become either stretched or torn. The hip flexor muscles are responsible for moving the knee towards the chest during activity and are also responsible for flexing the trunk when your hips is fixed. If the tension is more than the muscle can tolerate, these muscle fibres may tear.
