Tendon injury: Is inflammation present

Tendon injury: Is inflammation present

02Jul

Over the last 10 years or so the trends in treating tendon injuries has come away from an inflammatory model, with some research showing a lack of inflammation around injured tendons. However, clinically we would see some tendon injuries responding to ice, medication or other anti-inflammatory treatments. This article by Rees et al (2013) presents new evidence that there can be some element of an inflammatory response present with tendon injuries. While the main approach to tendon management, active rehabilitation and load management, is unlikely to change, a greater understanding of the processes going on in an injured tendon will help with better management of these painful conditions.
