Common Causes of Foot Pain


Foot pain, and injuries to the feet are very common. It can be as a result of injury, overuse or illness. Your chartered physiotherapist can do a lot to help you recover from your injury and ease pain. There are numerous causes of foot pain. These include:

  • ¬†Plantar Fasciitis or plantar fascia heel pain. This is a foot condition which causes pain on the heel the foot. There can be irritation and tightness around the arch of the foot. It is very treatable by physiotherapy, despite the pain it incurs. Treatment can include advice on footwear, soft tissue massage or dry needling to the calf muscles and exercise therapy.
  • Ankle sprains are very common injuries and often occurs when the foot is turned in forcefully, for example when landing from a jump. Ankle injuries can be debilitating and very painful. Thankfully, working with your physiotherapist, you will be able to address the associated discomfort.
  • Overuse. Overuse injuries can occur with a sudden increase or change in training. ¬†Injury from overuse can be treated by a range of treatments, among them manual therapy, dry needling, exercise therapy
  • Stress Fracture. This type of injury can occur more commonly in athletes or long distance runners. They can occur from overuse more so than a sudden injury or accident. Following treatment for the fracture, a course of physiotherapy can reduce pain and help restore function.
  • Tendonitis. Irritation and inflammation of tendons can be debilitating and painful. Your physiotherapist will work with you to restore motion and regain muscle strength.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis & Osteoarthritis. Your physiotherapist can help you in managing the effects of arthritis, through increasing your mobility, flexibility and strength. This can also form part of your pain management programme. Your physiotherapist can work alongside your GP or rheumatologist to give you the best results from treatment.
